  • Turkey Time!!!

    09 October 2014
Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in most jurisdictions of Canada, with the exceptions being the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, where it is an optional holiday. Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l’Action de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. In speaking to many people I often here them say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday of the year even more than Christmas and I guess I can see this as people gather for a big meal with little drama.

I for one really enjoy the holiday and the older I get the more I enjoy these traditional holidays. It seems that no matter what is going on around us and in the news (definitely a lot going on right now) these holidays give us an opportunity to reflect on the past and to feel whole once more. It is truly a time for people to be grateful for what we have whether it is a lot or just a little. Life moves fairly quickly today and there is not much time to reflect on what just happened and so I think it is really nice to have a holiday which you can say pressures us to be thankful for what we have and not always running towards what we don’t have yet.

If there is one thing that I’ve learned over the past year is that most people are coming to terms with what makes them happy as opposed to what gives them more. I think we are coming to this place in life where most people feel that what they do for a living and the way they live their lives should give them some sort of satisfaction. Don’t get me wrong these are not people saying that they will take less pay or drive second rate cars it’s just many people saying that they are unwilling to make themselves miserable to attain these things.

I am grateful for where I am in life and while it was not easy for my business partner and myself to get to this point I can honestly say that all the blood, sweat and tears it took to just try to carve out a life just a little bit better was worth it. So I would say that while life will always be a challenge and there will always be problems to face, we should just make sure that we pick the challenges that will keep us on the path to our own personal fulfillment. “Choose your battles”

    Happy Thanksgiving

  • The only constant in life is Change

    18 September 2014
The only constant in life is Change

Change refers to a difference in a state of affairs at different points in time. Although it is a familiar experience, an analysis of change provides subtle problems which have occupied philosophers since the Presocratics. Heraclitus is the first philosopher known to have directly raised such issues, with aphorisms such as “one cannot step into the same river twice”.

Change is to become different to make (someone or something) different to become something else. In today’s world, things change at record speeds making it very difficult for people to catch up with the speed in which the pendulum swings. Unlike 50 years ago, analysts predict that the average life of a corporation will be approximately 5 to 10 years while the average career is roughly 5 years. If we look back a generation, our parents might have worked in the same company for their entire working life. Odds are that today’s average worker will change careers at least 4 or 5 times throughout their work lives. Technology and the speed in which information flows today leaves very little time for us to sit and ponder decisions.

Google and the internet has changes most industries as we know them. Today people spend a lot more time researching on Google than visiting the well educated professionals. It is fairly easy to visit a site like www.legalzoom.com and prepare all of your legal documents and then simply get them notarized by a notary public. Year’s ago this would have required a lawyer and substantial out of pocket cost. Bottom line things get done in record time today compared to 20 years ago. Perfect example, need a degree? Just do it online.

With countries opening their borders for immigration like never before we are also seeing cultural and ethnic changes like never before. Diverse cultural interacting is more and more becoming the new normal. Just look at the average food court today in any major North American city, it’s like visiting an international food fair. What does this all mean for the average person? In my opinion it is that most large cities are mimicking each other and taking the best that each has to offer and making it their own. In 5 years living in Beijing will be just like living in Toronto with just a few cultural differences but the over all experience with be very similar.

With the world population growing at record levels it is clear that the future well the near future anyway is going to be based in the growth of infrastructure. We need somewhere to put these people and something for them all to do when they are not eating and shopping at the mall.

“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living.”
    Gail Sheehy

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

  • To be Rich or to be Happy

    03 September 2014
To be Rich or to be Happy

The definition of Rich is having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds. And the definition of Happiness is the feeling pleasure and enjoyment because of your life, situation, etc. Today it would seem that it would almost come down to a choice. Let’s face it, we are not as impressed with wealth as we once were. Years ago if a person was wealthy with great financial means they would be entitled to whatever they wanted, however, today it would seem that people are less and less impressed with those who are well heeled.

There is something to be said for that wonderful feeling of closeness and family reliance when one has limited means. We appreciate things more and also we value those around us that are usually there for us when tough times are abound. These are the things that give life meaning for many people, take these life circumstances away and we are simply left with a lot of time to create dilemmas in our lives. Case and point my two new guilty pleasures on the boob tube this fall, “Southern Charm” about old money and “Rich Kids of Beverley Hills” new money. What both of these shows have in common, is that none of these people look very happy. Look I’m not saying that having boat loads of money is not a fantastic proposition and anyone would probably jump at the chance to be wealthy however it looks like the human problems that we all face on a day to day basis stay the same whether we are rich or poor.

The reality is that you really only need one dependable car and one comfortable principal dwelling to live comfortably, any more and it gets confusing. Money is important, anyone who tells you it’s not is probably already rich, however, happiness is equally as important. Ideally if you can amass both then you’re golden but if you are willing to sacrifice your happiness in pursuit of money then that is a pretty expensive undertaking. I grew up with a single mother who solely supported my older brother and I and she was amazing. Thinking back growing up with my mother and older brother were probably some of the happiest times in my life. We didn’t have much but we had each other and so it was very easy to see what was important. This is what makes life Rich.

“Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.”

  • Amazon launches a shopping device which comes with a phone!!!

    30 July 2014
Amazon launches a shopping device which comes with a phone!!!

This is a sign of things to come. Statistics show that when it comes to online purchases in the US there is only about 5% market penetration and while in Canada there is 2% market penetration when it comes to online shopping. What this means to retailers is that there is plenty of room to move in that space.

Giant retailer Amazon has just launched their first smart phone called the “Fire Phone”. At first glance, it looks like a tricked out BlackBerry10 but from what I can see, there are some pretty cool features on the device. The main one being that you can take a picture of a product and using the image the phone with take you to Amazons website and you can purchase that item instantly. How cool is that!

The second really cool feature that we noticed on the phone was the Zillow APP which is changing the way that people source real estate. This is a useful APP for anyone who is interested in finding out about more than just details on a house it also lists the amenities in the surrounding neighbourhood.

From what I have seen this phone is not going up against just Apple and Samsung but rather all smart phones. Amazon has identified the consumer based market place where it looks like consumers will be able to make their lives much more efficient from their hand held device.

What this means for the retailer is that if “Fire Phone” is taking care of all of your impulse buying needs then it is important for most brick and mortar retail shops to catch with their online sales or get left behind. I think it is pretty safe to say that Amazon at this point probably has all of the stats on online retail shopping and consumer behaviour at their disposal and while the company has not turned a profit on the books with the Fire Phone as they are working on creating brand awareness which costs large in the telecommunication industry. Amazon is indeed primed (pardon the pun) and positioned to take advantage of the global online shopping market that they have created. I mean the logic is there, people go online to research most purchases and services that they are interested in purchasing and if they find it online at a better price then chances are they are going to buy it right then and there. What this means is that retail sales will continue to slow and companies will start entering the online market space in a big way.

Over the next 5 years the global economy will become more seamless and the global market place more localized. This gives way for smaller players to take advantage of vast markets. With the internet shrinking the world there are great opportunities for companies to grow there businesses.

One of my favorite shows on television is House Hunters International – it takes you all these different exotic places that one would never dream of moving to permanently and you discover that they are just like where we live but the main difference being geography and culture and language in some cases.

So while the global economy is becoming more and more a reality it’s pretty safe to say that internet shopping is only going to get more and more competitive and so if you have a product or services to offer then we suggest you start your 24 hour store on the internet (if you don’t already have one) and get opened for business.

  • Keeping it Real

    22 July 2014
    Keeping it Real

“The real McCoy” is an idiom and metaphor used in much of the English-speaking world to mean “the real thing” or “the genuine article”, e.g., “he’s the real McCoy”. One theory for the origin of the term “The real McCoy is that railroad engineers looking to avoid inferior copies would request it by name, inquiring if a locomotive was fitted with ‘the real McCoy system”. According to the Webster’s dictionary Real means: something which is actually existing or happening, not imaginary, not fake, false, or artificial and it is also important to note that real is important and deserving to be regarded or treated in a serious way.

To be or not to be authentic, real or genuine not copied or false true and accurate. This takes guts because sometimes our authentic selves are not always the best look. For example Domino’s Pizza has been running an add “We are not afraid to fail” Brilliant! This speaks volumes about who is running this company and the message I took away from this ad is that this company would rather own their mistakes rather than just pretend they don’t make any. At last a company being human those are qualities I can trust.

Sleemans the beer company has been running an ad claiming that they fought prohibition and the adversity the company faced during this period where it was illegal to sell alcohol. Not the prettiest past however, it’s real and they own it a brand with a back bone. Bacardi ran a similar add which spoke to there turbulent times during the prohibition era. This trend of companies telling it like it is and saying hey we went through tough times too and we made it through resonates with most people today. It is nice to know that we are not alone in our struggles and that everyone goes through good times and bad and it is not something to be ashamed of but something that we over came from and learned from and built character.

This new trend of “Own it marketing” is a game changer and we have the internet to thank for this, the days of the attractive face on television and the huge corporation that can do no wrong are over. Recently GM says faulty ignition switches were responsible for at least 13 deaths. It took the company 11 years to recall the cars. GM settled a huge law suit over 50 cent ignition switch problem and if you watched the senate committee hearing an internal report found GM attorneys signed settlements with the families of crash victims but didn’t tell engineers or top executives about mounting problems with ignition switches. It also found that GM’s legal staff acted without urgency. Today corporations are just as, if not more so scrutinized by the public and so what this translates to is a better customer experience because today someone is always watching.

  • Kindness is the new Mean!

    07 July 2014
    Kindness is the new Mean!
A random act of kindness is a selfless act performed by a person or people wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual person or people. The phrase may have been coined by Anne Herbert, who says that she wrote “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a place mat at a Sausalito restaurant in 1982 or 1983. Is the internet making us more kind? Is it no longer ok to bully the weaker person?

Over the past few years there has been an increase in the use of social media for social justice and not for just atrocities (an extremely wicked or cruel act, typically one involving physical violence or injury.) But for everyday social injustice done on the common man. This weekend there was an interview conducted by CNN correspondent anchor Fredericka Whitfield, the interview Saturday was to talk about her new book, but ended up yanking out her earpiece in the middle of the interview and storming off set instead. Online headlines read ” Joan Rivers Tells CNN Reporter To ‘Shut Up’ And Storms Off Set”

Fredericka Whitfield, who had suggested that her “Fashion Police” commentary was “mean.” Shortly after this Joan Rivers had had enough and abruptly exited the interview. While I do enjoy Joan Rivers comedy, I can sort of see the point of the interviewer. If you are gonna dish it out then you should at least be able to take it. With the changing of the guard in late night television it is pretty clear that “Mean” is out and “Kind” is in. It is no longer socially acceptable to be the bully in the school yard. Words hurt and scare just as much as sticks and stones. I think those days of making others feel bad for the sake of entertainment have come to an end. I mean think about it if you want to a party and dressed up in what you felt was an amazing outfit and all of your friends told you that you look fantastic and then after the party it was broadcast all over the media that you were voted “Worst dressed” think that would hurt at least a bit.

This thing is we know better now, years ago we might be able to laugh it off and say “I was just kidding” or “Didn’t mean to hurt your feeling’s” but now we know that it does hurt people’s feelings and it is just mean and unnecessary. While I do feel that we should develop a thick skin because life is tough at times and you need a back bone to get through it successfully . It is no longer okay to belittle someone just for the entertainment of others.

“Your greatness is measured by your kindness; your education and intellect by your modesty; your ignorance is betrayed by your suspicions and prejudices, and your real caliber is measured by the consideration and tolerance you have for others.”
    – William J.H. Boetcker
“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.”

  • Breaking Bread.com

    29 May 2014

    Breaking Bread.com

Physically tearing a loaf of bread open, or breaking dry bread apart – traditionally a method of separating bread, rather than cutting with a knife. Metaphorically, having a meal together, or starting a meal. For the purposes of this blog we will focus on the latter. Over the years, we have seen many good ideas come and go and while you cannot dance at every wedding there are some ideas that should be shared so that someone else might execute on that idea in order to contribute to the global village.

We have decided to share this idea as we don’t have the time to nurture it to life. The idea is simple, it is an APP which one can access from their smart phone. How we envisioned it working was that whenever someone is going out for a meal, grocery shopping or just going for coffee this app lets you share your meal or beverage with someone across the globe. The idea being let’s just say that you are at Starbucks and are just about to order that large coffee worth about 5 bucks and you are alone and decide that you want virtual company then you can go to the app and donate say 3 dollars to the (Let’s call it breaking bread app for now) app and three dollars will go towards providing food to someone else on the planet in need.

How it works is the app will allow you to purchase tokens, say each token will represent 50 cents and will appear on you phone bill at the end of the month. All the funds will go directly to the three largest food distribution companies with global reach who will in turn partner up with the the largest charities who are already distributing food on a global scale. Also for North America, every city has food banks and a certain portion from the global drive should also be distributed at home as there are many in need in Canada and the United States.

The idea behind this APP is that we can all help in a small way and it all adds up. Today everyone has a smart phones and imagine if you were able to get 50 cents from one hundred million people every month to put towards feeding the hungry. Anything after that is just multiples.

Well we put the idea out there. We can only hope that someone has the time and the means to take this idea and make it there own. I’d use this App.

  • Welcome to the New Romantic Era

    09 May 2014
Romanticism was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850. Partly a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, today it is being sparked be the world wide web, it was also a revolt against the aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment and a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature. For much of the peak Romantic period it was associated with liberalism and radicalism, its long-term effect on the growth of nationalism was probably more significant.

“Today’s global economy needs to be placed in a broader perspective,” Christopher Cowdray CEO Dorchester Collection said. “Most of us are not aware of the investors behind the brands that have become an integral part of our everyday life, from the gas we put in our cars, to the clothes we wear, to the way we use social media and to the hotels we frequent. American companies across the board are funded by foreign investment, including sovereign wealth funds.”

On April 14, militants with the Islamic fundamentalist group Boko Haram reportedly attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in the northern Nigerian town of Chibok and kidnapped nearly 300 girls. Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenage activist who survived a Taliban assassination attempt, also spoke up for the missing girls, in an interview with NBC News. First lady Michelle Obama tweeted a message in support of the kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls on Wednesday.

Apple is closing in on its largest ever acquisition with the planned $3.2 billion purchase of Beats Electronics, the headphone maker and music streaming operator founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and the hip-hop star Dr Dre. While Beats commands a leading position in the premium headphone market, its real value to Apple is in revitalizing its “cool” at a time when iTunes has waned in popularity and Samsung’s marketing campaigns have savaged the iPhone’s brand.

President Vladimir Putin is making his first visit to Crimea since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in March. He told crowds marking the 1945 Soviet victory over the Nazis that Crimea had shown loyalty to a “historical truth” in choosing to be part of Russia. The Kiev government protested at the visit, calling it a “gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty”.

With this new period or era of Romanticism, it is clear we will dissect continents, nations, governments, countries and corporations to find which ideas work on a global scale and this will be a long and tedious process fueled by the internet and played out in books, art, music, literature, and historical relevance. It is no longer enough to understand our own personal history, with globalization being the future it is essential that we understand global history for future harmony.

  • We Are All The Same!

    29 April 2014

The English word tribe occurs in 12th-century Middle English literature as referring to one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The word is from Old French tribu, in turn from Latin tribus, referring to the original tripartite ethnic division of the Ancient Roman state. Dating as far back as the hunting and gathering stage was humanity’s first and most successful adaptation, occupying at least 90 percent of human history. Until 12,000 years ago, all humans lived this way.

As human beings we all descend from tribes. A tribe is viewed, historically or developmentally, as a social group existing before the development of, or outside of, states. Many people used the term tribal society to refer to societies organized largely on the basis of social, especially familial, descent groups like a clan or kinship. A customary tribe in these terms is a face-to-face community, relatively bound by kinship relations, reciprocal exchange and strong ties to a particular place.

Hunting and gathering was presumably the subsistence strategy employed by human societies beginning some 1.8 million years ago, by Homo erectus, and from its appearance some 0.2 million years ago by Homo sapiens. What this brief look into history tells us is that we all descend from the same place. In fact it is our differences that make us unique. In modern business today we see these differences being celebrated more and more in all aspects of culture from food, music, fashion, art and even architecture. in fact globalization is uniting the four corners of the globe at record speed.

What this means is that 20 years from now we will most likely have a global society one which is governed more by the human consciousness than government thus it will become more important to accept our global partners and explore more what we have in common than what sets us apart. Never before in history has the human experience had so much say in determining how societies progress through technology and inter-connectivity via the internet. There is a collective consciousness which speaks out loud and fast against human injustice big and small.

We all want what is interesting and cool and makes us feel good about our lives and are willing to look for these things in other cultures if we are going to consume the cool and exotic from different cultures then we should at least be willing to respect the differences since at the core “We Are All The Same!”

  • Inspiration Blog

    13 April 2014

Hello and welcome to our inspiration blog!

It has been a while since I have posted a blog on our website and at first I came to the conclusion that I had just run out of topics to blog about. But since topics much like creativity and innovation are infinitely limitless I quickly realized that this was not the case. I realized that I was just entering into a new mode of inspiration.

Inspiration (from the Latin inspirare, meaning “to breathe into”) refers to an unconscious burst of creativity in a literary, musical, or other artistic endeavour. The concept has origins in both Hellenism and Hebraism. The Greeks believed that inspiration or “enthusiasm” came from the muses, as well as the gods Apollo and Dionysus.

In the 18th century in England, nascent psychology competed with a renascent celebration of the mystical nature of inspiration. John Locke’s model of the human mind suggested that ideas associate with one another and that a string in the mind can be struck by a resonant idea. Therefore, inspiration was a somewhat random but wholly natural association of ideas and sudden unison of thought.

Once we find our thought and idea pattern changing with our life reality and it usually takes a while for one’s inspiration to align itself with the new life circumstance and mental state. In laymens terms there is so much positive and good going on in the world that it really is quite difficult to write a piece that is not positive and in the moment. I think we are living in a sort of Eckart Tolle “The New Earth Generation” where most things are in the present and the now. To dwell on the past or the negative is almost like living in yesterday. There is so much new and exciting coming at us from so many different forums of social commentary that it is somewhat difficult to dwell on one or two particular points of interest.

Oprah is interviewing Pharrell Williams the genius producer which is just one of the hat’s that he wears. I caught a tid bit of the interview on Facebook which will air Sunday night on the OWN Network and the guy is a genius. There are so many ideas going on in his head at one time that I instantly felt inadequate in my ability to process concepts even half as well as this fellow. But then Oprah asked him what was his inspiration for doing all that he does and he was able to pin point it down to a particular song that started him on the musical career path. I got the answer right there. Do it all for inspiration, the answers will come.

Presently technology is taking a back seat to human innovation. Sure tech is huge and will remain so for the next 10 years at least. But it is the applications and what we are doing with it that is really making a difference in people’s lives. I read a piece in the Harvard Business Review last week and the main idea of the article was to make employees feel something, anything because if they don’t feel chances are they don’t care and if they don’t care about the job then they probably will not make a good employee. There is so much information out there and positive reinforcement on how to do anything you want in life that the only thing that would cause most people to fail today would be lack of effort.

The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails. -John Maxwell

To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all. -Oscar Wilde
