Welcome to the fourth installment of our Blog series on Social media and online marketing

In this blog we will show how the big data companies like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Google and others have grown to a larger market capitalization industry than the oil and gas sector. Much like drilling for oil and gas you have to mine big data and for those of you who don’t know how big data works we will provide this brief example. Let’s say you are in a particular industry for example, you own a micro brewery and you want to sell to consumers who like micro brewed beer.

Someone with the resources can target market on the internet and use Social Media marketing. For example, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram or Google and target that exact consumer for micro brewed beer. Not only will they see what their competitors are selling their beer for but they can optimize their pricing so that they can get a large part of that particular industry. In short, big data allows a few players to take advantage of entire industries by marketing exactly to those most likely to purchase micro brewed beer.

But first we should continue our brief look back at the history of online marketing from 2010 to present day.

2010 – present: Marketers find value in native ads
Around this time, a new group of media companies began to emerge. Websites like BuzzFeed and Mashable presented advertisers with new opportunities to connect with their audiences through sponsored content and native advertising.

Advertisers pay to produce articles, videos, and other types of content for news and media sites. The nature of the content itself is promotional, but the format looks less like an ad and more like a regular piece of content on the host’s website. Instead of relying on ads that disrupt their target audience’s online experience, native advertising allows marketers to create promotional content that supplements a user’s online experience. “Marketers interested in targeting ads to specific consumers in an unobtrusive fashion should seriously consider spending some time on native ads.”

Websites that traditionally generated revenue from display ads began to realize that they could create a better user experience by relying primarily on native ads — rather than traditional display ads — without compromising on ad revenue. However, we are seeing more and more companies today focussing on creating quality original content in order to gain market share and they are shying away from Native Ads.

    The Future of Advertising
That’s a look back at the history of online advertising — but what about the future?
According to recent data from HubSpot Research, 91% of respondents say ads are more intrusive today compared to just two to three years ago. It’s clear that the future of digital advertising pivots on developing a targeted ad experience that offers consumers relevant content without feeling nosy or invasive. In order to understand the growth and progression of this type of advertising it is important to examine Big Data.

“Big data” is a field that treats ways to analyze, systematically extract information from, or otherwise deal with data sets that are too large or complex to be dealt with by traditional data-processing application software. “The estimated value for the industry due to digital transformation is about $1.7 trillion. “Data is the new oil. It’s valuable, but if unrefined it cannot really be used. It has to be changed into gas, plastic, chemicals, etc to create a valuable entity that drives profitable activity; so, must data be broken down, analyzed for it to have value.”

Wikipedia states that Big Data in the analysis of data sets one can find new correlations to “spot business trends, prevent diseases, combat crime and so on.” Scientists, business executives, practitioners of medicine, advertising and governments alike regularly meet difficulties with large data-sets in areas including Internet searches, fintech, urban informatics, and business informatics. Scientists encounter limitations in e-Science work, including meteorology, genomics, connectomics, complex physics simulations, biology and environmental research.

Data sets grow rapidly, in part because they are increasingly gathered by inexpensive and numerous information-sensing internet-based devices such as mobile devices, aerial (remote sensing), software logs, cameras, microphones, radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers and wireless sensor networks. By 2025, IDC predicts there will be 163 zettabytes of data. One question for large enterprises is determining who should own big-data initiatives that affect the entire organization

  • Welcome to our 3rd installment of our blog series on the evolution of paid online advertising

Welcome to our 3rd installment of our blog series on the evolution of paid online advertising

In this blog, we will continue covering the early history of online paid marketing and advertising between 2006 up to 2010. In these formative years of online paid advertising, we’ve seen the growth and evolution of this type of marketing which started out as simply online branding for most small and large companies to where we’ve seen companies spending upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly in order to reach their target audience. As social media has grown so has the users searching online for what influencers are pedalling thus this created a wonderful opportunity for the growth of paid online advertising where companies could target a specific audience for a specific product or service.

    2006: Digital ads become hyper-targeted
As social media platforms picked up steam in the mid 2000s, advertisers sought a way to integrate ad content in a way that was both effective and non-intrusive. Marketers wanted a plan of action to reach younger internet users who were increasingly unswayed by banner ads and spending most of their internet time on social networks.

After previously resisting ads on its site, Facebook started working with advertisers in 2006 as a way to increase the young company’s profitability. They started with small display ads and sponsored links, and eventually moved onto ads targeted to a user’s demographics and interests. Despite some controversies along the way, Facebook has proven itself to be a targeted ad pioneer, changing the way that companies reach their desired audiences online.

“Our strategy is much less about increasing the volume of ads and much more about increasing the quality of the content and the quality of the targeting to get the right content to the right people,” Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in 2014.

Targeting consumers with relevant ads — rather than bombarding them with a large volume of ad content — has become a standard practice for online advertisers, particularly on social media. Beyond Facebook’s targeting efforts, other social networks such as Twitter, YouTube, and Google+ focus on providing an advertising experience for users that doesn’t feel aggressive or impersonal.

In real estate, the saying is Location, location, location but on the internet, the saying goes Content, content, content. The simple rule with online marketing is that your content has to be captivating and compelling. Researchers 3 years ago did what they do and researched and found that it takes about 22 seconds for an internet user to decide whether or not to click through to your website or ad or not. Today, that time for a user takes to decide whether or not to click on your ad is probably closer to a nanosecond. This is why it’s so important to develop attention grabbing quality content.

I often have this discussion with clients who come into our office and want to build a website that appeals to them and I will say to them if you cannot create spectacular food for a dinner party that you intend to hold, then you should hire caterers especially if you want your guest raving about your party and come to your next event.

Part II: Continuation of examining the history of online paid advertising : 1999 – 2002: Advertisers turn to paid search and pay-per-click

Direct marketing is a form of communicating an offer, where organizations communicate directly to a pre-selected-customer and supply a method for a direct response. Among practitioners, it is also known as direct response marketing. By contrast, advertising is of a mass-message nature, whereas online marketing drives brand awareness for your company, events, content and products or services. Digital marketing is the process of promoting your business online. There are dozens of different strategies that can be a part of this process. All of these strategies are designed to improve brand awareness and consistently grow your business over time.

With a minimal investment, digital marketing can change the future of your company by earning you more customers, bringing in more revenue, and achieving your business goals. We are continuing our blog series by looking back at the development of online marketing over the past several years. As banner ads continued to gain popularity, advertisers became increasingly interested in targeting specific consumer demographics, rather than just placing their ads wherever space was offered and hoping the right people would see it. This led to the beginning of targeted ad placement. WebConnect, an ad agency that specialized in online ads, began helping their clients identify websites their ideal consumers visited. Now, companies could place ads where their target demographics were more likely to see them. This was nothing short of revolutionary in the digital advertising space.  Not only were companies reaching more relevant audiences, but websites hosting the ads were also able to display banners that were more applicable to their visitors.

1999 – 2002: Advertisers turn to paid search and pay-per-clickBy this time, the web was expanding rapidly and users needed a better way to navigate the terrain. With search engines steadily gaining popularity, advertisers looked to create ads that were more targeted and less loathsome. They turned to sponsored search as the next digital advertising frontier.

In 1999, GoTo.com — an emerging search engine company that would later be acquired by Yahoo — introduced the first pay-for-placement search engine service. Advertisers were given the opportunity to bid for top search engine results on particular keywords. Despite some initial outcries that paid search would lead to corrupt results, GoTo.com was able to monetize their search engine through the model. Pay-for-placement eventually evolved into pay-per-click. Companies bid on search result placement on a per-click basis: e.g., I’ll pay GoTo.com $1 per click if you put my company as the top search result. This led to search results that were largely determined by how much a company was willing to pay. The highest bidders were usually listed first, even above more relevant content, and it was unclear to users which results were paid and which were organic content. The user experience of paid search was suffering, and one up-and-coming search engine thought they could fix it.

Google introduced AdWords in 2000, originally under a pay-for-placement ad model. Google wanted to create a sponsored search experience that generated revenue without compromising the quality and relevancy of search results. This is where we will start to get a bit more detailed in our blog series regarding paid online marketing which is quickly becoming the standard for all business marketing needs. In our next blog, we will examine the growth of paid advertising from 2002 when Google started with pay-per-click advertising and examine the evolution of this marketing tool to where we are today. The future looks very bright for online marketing and those who get in now will dominate their business field in the next 5 years while others will flounder.Source From Karla Cook for hubspot.com <https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/history-of-online-advertising

  • A Brief History of Paid online Advertising Continued

A Brief History of Paid online Advertising Continued

We are continuing our blog series on the history of online marketing and we are sharing some excellent information written by Karla Cook for hubspot.com. Paid advertising is only going to get bigger and bigger and any company or institution who is not taking advantage of this targeted marketing tool are sure to get left behind. In order to understand the future of online paid marketing, it is important for us to see how it developed and its origins. The next two blogs will focus on the past 14 or so years to the present and then we will look at the future of online paid targeted online marketing and video production.

Hot Wired devised a plan to set aside portions of its website to sell space to advertisers, similar to how ad space is sold in a print magazine. They called the ad spaces “banner ads” and charged advertisers an upfront cost to occupy the real estate for a set time period — very different from today’s pay-per-click model.

WebConnect also introduced the CustomView tool, which capped the number of times a particular user was shown a single banner ad. If a user had already seen an ad a certain number of times, they would be shown another ad instead. Users tend to stop noticing a banner ad after they’ve seen it before, so capping the number of times a user sees an ad helped early online advertisers prevent “banner fatigue”. Ad frequency capping is still a common display ad tactic advertisers use today.

1996: ROI tracking tools begin to improve

In 1996, banner ads plastered the internet, but advertisers still didn’t have a good process to determine if these ads were actually driving tangible results for their businesses. Marketers needed a way to more efficiently manage their display ad campaigns across multiple websites and report on how users were interacting with their ads.

Doubleclick emerged on the scene as one of the first ROI tools for banner ad campaigns. They offered advertisers a new service called D.A.R.T (Dynamic Advertising Reporting & Targeting), which enabled companies to track how many times an ad was viewed and clicked across multiple websites.

Craig Kanarick, one of the digital consultants hired to work on the campaign, remembers the team’s goal was to make an ad that didn’t feel like an ad, and actually offered valuable content to users. “Let’s not sell somebody something,” he recalled thinking, “Let’s reward them for clicking on this thing brought to you by AT&T.”

The banner ad concept blew up as a way for websites to keep their content ungated and free for users, and it wasn’t long before other companies — such as Time Inc. and CMP’s Tech web — were seeking out advertisers to lease banner space as a sustainable way to scale their sites.

  • It’s High school all over again!!!

It’s High school all over again!!!

The internet in many ways has made our lives a lot like being in high school all over again, while this is a broad statement, we will only be focusing on that part of high school which separates the popular kids from the not so popular kids and the academic over achievers from the middle of the roaders and this will be a six part blog series for the summer focusing on the growth of paid online advertising and the use of Facebook, You Tube, Instagram and Twitter (Branding).

Like every society past present and future our very existence is dependant on a few vital things for our survival and advancement, these being food, shelter and clothing. Now the human condition is to always be innovating and advancing through technology and science.  In June of 1836, French newspaper La Presse was the first to include paid advertising in its pages, which allowed them to lower their newspaper price, extend its readership and this is where our story begins. Fast forward to 1999 to 2002, advertisers turned to pay per click and paid search and then in 2006 digital ads become hyper targeted. Since then online advertising has been growing at a feverish pace.

Remember when “surfing the net” meant traversing a minefield of unwelcome pop-up ads? When “digital advertising” referred almost exclusively to obnoxious flashing banners and random sidebar ads?

AT&T paid Hot Wired $30,000 to place their banner ad on their site for three months. The ad enjoyed a click-through-rate of 44% — a number that would make most marketers balk in disbelief today. To put that in perspective, the average clickthrough rate on display ads today — 22 years later — is closer to 0.06%.

The user experience of paid search was suffering, and one up-and-coming search engine thought they could fix it. Google introduced AdWords in 2000, originally under a pay-for-placement ad model. Google wanted to create a sponsored search experience that generated revenue without compromising the quality and relevancy of search results.

While previous paid search models like GoTo.com relied on bids from advertisers to determine search rankings, AdWords introduced a Score model, which took into account an ad’s clickthrough rate when determining its placement on the search results page. Even if an ad had a lower bid, it would still appear above other less relevant paid ads in search results thanks to its high clickthrough rate. The Quality Score model is still used today.

Today paid advertising also depends a lot on social media accounts and the number of visitors and followers to those accounts.  Advertisers will pay influencers like the Kardashians tens of thousands of dollars to have a post on one of their platforms i.e. Instagram. In this case, the Kardashians would be the cool kids and this is where the high school analogy comes in. The more followers you have on your social media accounts, the more traffic you command, thus the more advertisers will pay to reach your audience.

It’s essential that your content is current, original and interesting this keeps visitors coming back and the chance of getting them as clients.

Over the next 6 weeks we will explore where online marketing originated and where it is going and also, we are going to explore the making of videos with your smart phone which will be good enough to post.

  • Open source

    Open source

Open source is a term denoting that a product includes permission to use its source code, design documents, or content. It most commonly refers to the open-source model, in which open-source software or other products are released under an open-source licence as part of the open source software movement. Use of the term originated with software, but has expanded beyond the software sector to cover other open content and forms of open collaboration. In fact, one could argue that our world has become open sourced. (Wikipedia)

I recall back in the day, when there were just a few of us forward thinkers posting selfies throughout our work day and folks found it odd that we would post pictorial documentation of our daily activities for all to see.  However, it just made sense to us, that if we are going to engage you or your company for your products or services, we want to know more about who you are and what you do on your down time, how many reps do you do at the gym, are you a vegan, vegetarian or out and out carnivore. Bottom line is we want to be able to relate on a personal level to who we engage to do business with.

Many of you might remember back when your name sake was all you needed to make it, “Do you know who my father is?” Was like a “Black Card” It held it’s weight in gold, however, today not so much, it’s more like nope, don’t know who your daddy is and don’t really care, what have you done??? Fact of the matter is the internet disconnected us physically but connected us visually and intellectually. We utilize totally different emotional senses when interacting with our phones than we would if encountering a person face to face.

The beauty of the internet is that like Wikipedia, it’s open source and there is always someone watching 24/7 8 days a week ready to chime in to say wait a minute that’s not what really happened or “Girl he be lying”.  This changed the way companies and individuals operated. You used to be able to hide behind your computer or reputation but those days are gone.

Today, the internet has become so sophisticated that everything we do out there has become open source, every keystroke originates from an IP address so if this is where we are today just imagine the level of open source openness that the world will be in 10 years (assuming we start taking better care of our planet). Just imagine in order so see folks in there skives we would have to go to the beach or the gym now we just go to Instagram. I love this new open source world we are living in because it keeps folks accountable. We all know what is developing before it’s too late and I for one think that’s a good thing.

  • The SEO Process!

    Putting It All Together!

So you have found a good industry appropriate domain and picked out a layout that you like for your company’s online appearance. The next step is for our technical team to make sure that your Headers are in place, check the length and relevancy of your Title tag, check the length and relevancy of your description meta tag, check the number of keywords and relevancy of your keyword meta tag, Analyze the Robots meta tag directives and check if the search engines are allowed to spider the page, We also have to check each page for the most relevant keywords or key phrases, check how the page may be displayed within search engine results, check links found both external and internal URLs on each page, Check the keywords found in the Anchor tags or links. Check the keywords found in the Anchor tags (links) Check the keywords found in the image Alt attributes check the page Heading and phrase elements. And the final stage in the SEO friendly planning is to check the site structure. Keep in mind that Google indexes information according to categories and sections and so each page should be sectioned with different targeted keywords and key phrases so that each page of your website can be crawled and indexed separately for its content.

The ALT attribute is a critical step that is often overlooked. This can be a lost opportunity for better rankings. In Google’s webmaster guidelines, they advise the use of alternative text for the images on your web site: Use the alt attribute to provide descriptive text. In addition, we recommend using a human-readable caption and descriptive text around the image. Why would they ask us to do that? The answer is simple, really; search engines have the same problem as blind users. They cannot see the images. At this point your site is generally ready to be hosted on a server and submitted to the various Search engines Google, Yahoo, Ask and Bing or Msn etc.. While there is no perfect SEO and no guarantee that your site will stay on the position that you optimize for you can insure through proper coding and obeying Google guidelines that your website will be indexed and perform well with a proper linking strategy and blog writing.

Keep in mind that Google is interested in providing the best and most current and accurate information available for it’s users and so it is important that when hiring on a website development company that they pay special attention to practices like high keyword density as it can, on some search engines, trigger spam filters, which may result in a penalty for your site’s ranking. Even without such a penalty, your site’s rankings will not benefit from this tactic. Many webmasters and inexperienced or unethical SEOs abuse the use of this attribute, trying to stuff it with keywords, hoping to achieve a certain keyword density, which is not as relevant for rankings now as it once was. Today it is all about Links and Blogging and having your site Crawled or Cached on a regular basis!

Please note that SEO is not a 100% accurate science for search engine algorithms! Nobody knows the exact algorithms that the search engines use! Therefore, SEO attempts to provide the best listing results for your company but no SEO firm can guarantee that spot as the Google algorithm changes from time to time.
    There you have it!

Social Media shows no sign of slowing down in fact the internet and internet access is growing every year in double digit percentage points and this is transforming the world quite rapidly but it all started with Myspace. If we look at the evolution of my space and how that social network transformed how we connect as humans we should be able to plot the next 20 to 30 years of human social development and trends.

We seem to have entered a phase of the personal brand, we are all aspiring to be the best that we can be and gain as many followers on the various social platforms like twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Individuals are becoming brands and the more memorable the better. Instagram stories allows us to peer into the private world of strangers and judge them with their permission because today it is more important to be real than perfect.

Social media has become the new word of mouth, its no longer how many stars a restaurant has but how many followers. Myspace is a social networking website offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music, and videos. It is headquartered in Beverly Hills, California. Myspace was acquired by News Corporation in July 2005 for $580 million. From 2005 to 2008, Myspace was the largest social networking site in the world, and in June 2006 surpassed Google as the most visited website in the United States. In April 2008, Myspace was overtaken by Facebook in the number of unique worldwide visitors, and was surpassed in the number of unique U.S. visitors in May 2009, though Myspace generated $800 million in revenue during the 2008 fiscal year. Since then, the number of Myspace users has declined steadily in spite of several redesigns. As of March 2017, Myspace was ranked 3,178 by total Web traffic, and 1,650 In the United States.
