  • Is SEO Dead?

Every once in a while, I will hear someone in the industry claim that SEO is dead and something else is going to take its place (usually social networking). While, I do feel that search engine optimization is only a small component in an online marketing strategy, I would have to say that SEO is here for at least the next few years. It’s a popular statement for ‘forward thinkers’ to claim that Google’s days are numbered and that soon, the masses are going to stop searching in the traditional method and start find information on the web using some other form of media. These ‘forward thinkers’ are also usually self-proclaimed radical thinkers that can see ahead of the markets and know more about media than actual media and marketing experts. Unsurprisingly, these salesmen usually follow up their claims by getting you to invest in their great new idea.

The truth of the matter is, like it or not, Google is going to be around for the foreseeable future. Just like the Yellow Pages were around forever back in the pre-web days, there simply is no viable alternative. Google indexes everything it can and provides people with a tool to quickly flip through and find what they need. How do you replace such a simple, basic idea?

SEO will be around for at least a few more years simply because it logically has to be. Google is not powered by magic, it is powered by technology. Google sends out its bots to crawl the web and index what it can find so that we can search through an ever changing online environment. Obviously the Google algorithm is based on hard facts to display appropriate information when someone makes a search query. The secret to SEO is not to try and trick this algorithm but make it work for you and in the process, develop a better product. True, proper search engine optimization takes a lot of hard work and dedication. SEO experts know this and some do what it takes to generate proper code and content while others are constantly finding new ways to cut corners.

When people say that ‘SEO is dying’, what they mean is that those out there cutting corners are slowly falling behind. This is good. This means that Google is working hard to reward those of us who actually take the time to create new content, to provide useful information, and contribute positively to the online-world.

When I approach SEO, I take a client’s content and I rewrite it properly. I take points that are important to their message and work on creating text that makes the site a useful source of information. When people learn something new from your site, they tend to trust your products and marketing. When they trust your message, they will start to buy your products. If your information is constantly being updated and your providing new, useful information to your readers, Google will pick up on this and reward you with a higher ranking.

So, is SEO dead? I think that we are nearing the end of the days when SEO guys can make a few keyword changes to a site, point some random links to a client’s domain and artificially get a site moved to the top of the page. If you define SEO as clean coding a messy site and reorganizing content so that it’s easier to read and more informative for your visitors, then ‘SEO’ is here to stay.

  • What Is A Node?

A social network is a social structure made of individuals (or organizations) called “nodes,” which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige These are the basis that social networking on line environments on the web are designed to build on.Face book, Twitter, Linked in etc provide forums that are based on the nodes structure of human interdependency. In short people with similar professions and interests are more likely to congregate and share information and personal experiences relating to relationships, business or ideas. Because social networking is based on commonality between individuals or organizations there is usually a free exchange of ideals and information which can be easily adopted to the participants if forums. These exchanges are voluntary and so enable net workers to take the good and leave the bad while still being a willing participant in a community of information exchange.

Social network analysis views social relationships in terms of network theory consisting of nodes and ties. Nodes are the individual actors within the networks, and ties are the relationships between the actors. The resulting graph-based structures are often very complex. There can be many kinds of ties between the nodes. Research in a number of academic fields has shown that social networks operate on many levels, from families up to the level of nations, and play a critical role in determining the way problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals.

In its simplest form, a social network is a map of all of the relevant ties between all the nodes being studied. The network can also be used to measure social capital — the value that an individual gets from the social network. These concepts are often displayed in a social network diagram, where nodes are the points and ties are the lines. Social networks have also been used to examine how organizations interact with each other, characterizing the many informal connections that link executives together, as well as associations and connections between individual employees at different organizations. For example, power within organizations often comes more from the degree to which an individual within a network is at the center of many relationships than actual job title. Social networks also play a key role in hiring, in business success, and in job performance. Networks provide ways for companies to gather information, deter competition, and collude in setting prices or policies.

At Nexonta it is our goal to build on this developing trend. Today on the web information is in many ways connected to social networking and many individuals coming together to share ideas and opinions on products, services and new data which they feel is of some benefit to others in their network. The internet is always evolving and the more information that is being created the more we are asked to process, with social networking, individuals as well as organizations are able to come together and process information and trends much faster than if we were to do it ourselves. In the next few coming months we will be blogging about the ins and outs of social networking and how it relates to your company’s online presence.

  • Fundamentals of a well performing website!

Internet marketing, also referred to as i-marketing, web-marketing, online-marketing, Search Engine Marketing (SEM) or e-Marketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet.

The Internet has brought media to a global audience. The interactive nature of Internet marketing in terms of providing instant response and eliciting responses, is a unique quality of the medium. Internet marketing is sometimes considered to have a broader scope because it not only refers to the Internet, e-mail, and wireless media, but it includes management of digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management (ECRM) systems.

Internet marketing ties together creative and technical aspects of the Internet, including: design, development, advertising, and sales. Internet marketing also refers to the placement of media along many different stages of the customer engagement cycle through search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), banner ads on specific websites, e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies. In 2008 The New York Times, working with comScore, published an initial estimate to quantify the user data collected by large Internet-based companies. Counting four types of interactions with company websites in addition to the hits from advertisements served from advertising networks, the authors found the potential for collecting data upward of 2,500 times on average per user per month. And this is why we at Nexonta Technologies Inc pay special attention to the details.

  • SEO To Do or Not To Do – Hidden Text or Links

Google views hidden text and links as untrustworthy SEO practice because it presents information to search engines differently than to visitors to your site in hopes of gaining a higher ranking in the Google search results. If your website is found to contain hidden text and links that are deceptive in intent your website may be removed from the Google index, and will not appear in search results pages. In order to know if your website is in violation of these practices you should identify anything that is not legible to the human eye. Any text or links placed there for the sole purpose of the Google crawl bot rather than for a visitor to your site looking for a product, service or information. Common deceptive practices are, using white text on a white background while the Google Bot or Crawler can read the content for ranking purposes an individual cannot.

Including text behind an image, this is clearly a move to trick the Google Bot as this text cannot be viewed by an individual who visits your website. Also using the CSS language to hide text. Setting the font to size zero, while Google can still read the text a human cannot and so this is also an attempt to fool the Web Crawler. If using text to describe something search engines can’t access for example, Java Script, Images or Flash files keep in mind that many human visitors using screen readers, mobile browsers, browsers with plug-ins and slow connections will not be able to view that content either. Using descriptive text for these items will improve the accessibility of your site. Now here are a few Google approved tips for making your website accessible.

Images, use the ALT attribute to provide descriptive text, in addition Google recommends using a human-readable caption and descriptive text around the image. Java script, place the same content from the Java script in a no script tag, if you use this method, ensure the contents are exactly the same as what is contained in the Java Script and that this content is shown to visitors who do not have Java Script enabled in their browser. Video, include descriptive text about the video in HTML, you might also consider providing transcripts. If you do find hidden text or links on your website, either remove them or if they are relevant for your site’s visitors make them easily readable. Provide visitors the information they’re looking for, provide high-quality content in your pages, especially your home page, this is the single most important thing to do. Once your pages contain useful information, it will attract many visitors and entice webmasters to link to your site. In creating a helpful information-rich website you should always write pages that clearly and accurately describe your topic.

Linking, make sure that other sites link to yours, links help Crawlers locate your website and can give your site greater visibility in Google search results. When returning results for a search, Google uses sophisticated text-matching technique to display pages that are both relevant and important to each search. Google interprets a link from page A to page B. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important” Also note that Google algorithms can distinguish the difference between Natural links and Unnatural links. Natural links to your website develop as part of the dynamic nature of the web when other sites find your content valuable and think it would benefit their visitors. Unnatural links to your site are placed there specifically to make your site look more popular to search engines. Some of these types of links are schemes or doorway pages. And finally always make sure that the SEO consultant that you work with conducts their SEO by Google standards since if they are your host and they practice deceptive SEO practices then even being on one of their servers can lead to your website being penalized.

  • Basic Website Traffic Terminology

Page Views: The number of pages viewed is the basis of analytics and site traffic. At best, page views are a rough measurement. They’re the building blocks of analytics. Click backs and refreshed pages get double counted, while partial page loads can be counted differently. They need to be factored in to make statistics accurate.

Unique Page Views: A filtered view based on the number of pages a visitor views without the duplication of double visits to various pages. Duplicated visits can be examined with another view for visitor pathing. Whether a unique should be defined as unique to a session or some other time frame is subject to interpretation.

Frequently Visited Pages: The popularity and number of pages can show what content brings in long tail traffic and other insightful facts.

Visitors: The start of all in-depth analytics. Visitors are customers and users of your services in whatever capacity they come in. Visitors can be associated with so many factors — but most importantly they’re the ones that take action. A standard of their measurement should be established. Without a cookie or information about the visitor’s IP address, the accuracy of this number varies greatly.

Unique Visitors: Similar to page views (separated by a time frame), a unique visitor is generally one who’s visited once during a day, week, or month. The length of time can be segmented by many analytics programs — exactly how is the issue.
