Turkey Time!!!
09 October 2014
Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in most jurisdictions of Canada, with the exceptions being the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, where it is an optional holiday. Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l’Action de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. In speaking to many people I often here them say that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday of the year even more than Christmas and I guess I can see this as people gather for a big meal with little drama.
I for one really enjoy the holiday and the older I get the more I enjoy these traditional holidays. It seems that no matter what is going on around us and in the news (definitely a lot going on right now) these holidays give us an opportunity to reflect on the past and to feel whole once more. It is truly a time for people to be grateful for what we have whether it is a lot or just a little. Life moves fairly quickly today and there is not much time to reflect on what just happened and so I think it is really nice to have a holiday which you can say pressures us to be thankful for what we have and not always running towards what we don’t have yet.
If there is one thing that I’ve learned over the past year is that most people are coming to terms with what makes them happy as opposed to what gives them more. I think we are coming to this place in life where most people feel that what they do for a living and the way they live their lives should give them some sort of satisfaction. Don’t get me wrong these are not people saying that they will take less pay or drive second rate cars it’s just many people saying that they are unwilling to make themselves miserable to attain these things.
I am grateful for where I am in life and while it was not easy for my business partner and myself to get to this point I can honestly say that all the blood, sweat and tears it took to just try to carve out a life just a little bit better was worth it. So I would say that while life will always be a challenge and there will always be problems to face, we should just make sure that we pick the challenges that will keep us on the path to our own personal fulfillment. “Choose your battles”
Happy Thanksgiving
