Today The Opposite Is True!
10 November 2014
It is pretty clear that the world is changing fairly quickly before our eyes. Reading, watching and listening to the news, it is also fairly clear that information is being presented to us with a sort of here you go please don’t kill the messenger approach. We don’t create the news, we just report it, from the news reporting agency. While it is fairly obvious that every organization be it private or government has it’s secrets what we have been witnessing is the coming clean of organizations over the past few weeks. In the olden days 2012 organizations would generally deal with internal issues internally but today the opposite is true.
The court of public opinion is now in session and roaring ahead. Just last week there was a news story where the Liberal elect leader Justin Trudeau (Or Rock Star as I like to call him) someone reported directly to him about misconduct of two cabinet members, right away he took action and suspended the members pending an full investigation. In 2009, these types of allegations would be handled in back room deals behind closed doors. Today it would seem that no one wants to be left holding the bag because if you knew about the culpable situation and did or said nothing about it then in the court of public opinion you might as well have been the one pulling the trigger.
What does this all have to do with the internet and social media? Well everything, for example in today’s day to day activities many of us get our information from social media and the internet and with so many stresses and challenges living in a digitally changing world where what’s happening in Africa is just as important to our existence as what’s happening in Washington DC, we need our news fast and we need it accurate. Bottom line if you mess up well, you better come clean and quickly and you should apologize and mean it because we can tell.
However if you chose to hide the facts and embellish the truth then prepare to deal with the wrath of public opinion and a fire storm arising from social media channels. Never before have the masses had such a strong say in the direction of public trust and it seems to be coming a place for truth and openess. Years ago if you were a whistle blower you were vilified and probably black balled from that particular industry but today it would seem that the first to air the truth is the last man or woman standing. Over the next 10 years in this evolving global economy, Canada will most likely be exporting our Canadian culture and way of doing things like in Corporate structure, Banking and government thus transparency will play a big part in being Canadian.
“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world…would do this, it would change the earth.”
― William Faulkner
“Living with integrity means: Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others. Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values. Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe.”
