To be Rich or to be Happy

To be Rich or to be Happy

The definition of Rich is having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds. And the definition of Happiness is the feeling pleasure and enjoyment because of your life, situation, etc. Today it would seem that it would almost come down to a choice. Let’s face it, we are not as impressed with wealth as we once were. Years ago if a person was wealthy with great financial means they would be entitled to whatever they wanted, however, today it would seem that people are less and less impressed with those who are well heeled.

There is something to be said for that wonderful feeling of closeness and family reliance when one has limited means. We appreciate things more and also we value those around us that are usually there for us when tough times are abound. These are the things that give life meaning for many people, take these life circumstances away and we are simply left with a lot of time to create dilemmas in our lives. Case and point my two new guilty pleasures on the boob tube this fall, “Southern Charm” about old money and “Rich Kids of Beverley Hills” new money. What both of these shows have in common, is that none of these people look very happy. Look I’m not saying that having boat loads of money is not a fantastic proposition and anyone would probably jump at the chance to be wealthy however it looks like the human problems that we all face on a day to day basis stay the same whether we are rich or poor.

The reality is that you really only need one dependable car and one comfortable principal dwelling to live comfortably, any more and it gets confusing. Money is important, anyone who tells you it’s not is probably already rich, however, happiness is equally as important. Ideally if you can amass both then you’re golden but if you are willing to sacrifice your happiness in pursuit of money then that is a pretty expensive undertaking. I grew up with a single mother who solely supported my older brother and I and she was amazing. Thinking back growing up with my mother and older brother were probably some of the happiest times in my life. We didn’t have much but we had each other and so it was very easy to see what was important. This is what makes life Rich.

“Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.”
