Welcome to the New Romantic Era

09 May 2014
Romanticism was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850. Partly a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, today it is being sparked be the world wide web, it was also a revolt against the aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment and a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature. For much of the peak Romantic period it was associated with liberalism and radicalism, its long-term effect on the growth of nationalism was probably more significant.

“Today’s global economy needs to be placed in a broader perspective,” Christopher Cowdray CEO Dorchester Collection said. “Most of us are not aware of the investors behind the brands that have become an integral part of our everyday life, from the gas we put in our cars, to the clothes we wear, to the way we use social media and to the hotels we frequent. American companies across the board are funded by foreign investment, including sovereign wealth funds.”

On April 14, militants with the Islamic fundamentalist group Boko Haram reportedly attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in the northern Nigerian town of Chibok and kidnapped nearly 300 girls. Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenage activist who survived a Taliban assassination attempt, also spoke up for the missing girls, in an interview with NBC News. First lady Michelle Obama tweeted a message in support of the kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls on Wednesday.

Apple is closing in on its largest ever acquisition with the planned $3.2 billion purchase of Beats Electronics, the headphone maker and music streaming operator founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and the hip-hop star Dr Dre. While Beats commands a leading position in the premium headphone market, its real value to Apple is in revitalizing its “cool” at a time when iTunes has waned in popularity and Samsung’s marketing campaigns have savaged the iPhone’s brand.

President Vladimir Putin is making his first visit to Crimea since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in March. He told crowds marking the 1945 Soviet victory over the Nazis that Crimea had shown loyalty to a “historical truth” in choosing to be part of Russia. The Kiev government protested at the visit, calling it a “gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty”.

With this new period or era of Romanticism, it is clear we will dissect continents, nations, governments, countries and corporations to find which ideas work on a global scale and this will be a long and tedious process fueled by the internet and played out in books, art, music, literature, and historical relevance. It is no longer enough to understand our own personal history, with globalization being the future it is essential that we understand global history for future harmony.
