Social Media is Changing The World

“The choice for mankind lies between freedom and happiness and for the great bulk of mankind, happiness is better.” George Orwell, 1984 I think it is pretty safe to say that the internet and social media killed the propaganda machine which existed before the internet started to be used for social media and world wide connectivity. Technically, this global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol or IP addresses to serve several billion users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.

Throughout this network there is unlimited possibilities to explore human connectivity both good and bad as well as the sharing of information at lightning speeds which has made the world much more accessible to anyone with a computer terminal. For our purposes for this blog we would like to just look at how the internet has opened people up to one another and how more and more we are realizing that we are more the same than different.

Before the massive growth of social media (Arguably within the last 3 years) It was clear how radio and television showed how different people in different parts of the world would react to the same events. And today while watching the Olympics it would be hard to tell the difference between a Russian responding to a Russian Olympic athlete’s performance and a Canadian responding to a Canadian athlete’s performance. The same goes for world events and human devastation. We are are all touched by inhumanity and human injustice as well as humanity and justice for all and we respond in the same way universally.

Last Summer, I ran into a friend that I have known for about 25 years and we were catching up and he had asked me if I watch the news and I quickly responded “no,” I did not. Thinking back I probably came off as being somewhat ignorant of what is happening in the world and community in which I live, however what I negated to tell her was that I was dialed into almost every news source on social media and pretty much get my news in real time which is all being broadcast from Twitter or Facebook or news App via live feed from someones IPhone who was standing 10 feet away as the story just broke thus making traditional radio and television news programs more like summary reports which you can watch on television at the end of the day or listen to on the radio on the drive home from work.

What I think this translates into is the perfect sharing of real information in real time putting everyone on a even playing field. Even in sales today, today’s customers are more sophisticated because of their easy access to information and reviews about the product(s) you are selling. For this reason, your clients don’t “need” your sales team for the same reasons they once did. With all of this access to information there has become a transparency in the way people are interacting both personally and professionally.

Bottom line is it is there is too much information out there to fool people today with stuff that is simply not true this makes offline connectivity and human interactions that much more real and genuine. Over the past 5 years corporations and industries have been forced to be more transparent and if they refuse then people will simply get it done else where by someone that they can trust this is why social media is so important today to consumers as we want to know first hand who are we dealing with and are they who they say they are through all of that expensive branding or will they just say and do anything to get our business.

Billable hours is a term used in many firms that bill by the hour, one such industry is law this industry is changing rapidly. Today companies and individuals pay attention to the fees that they will pay for these types of services. Good for the little guy but not so much for the firm with 1300 Lawyers. Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts. Arnold Bennett

“One must change one’s tactics every ten years if one wishes to maintain one’s superiority.”
