Happy 2014 everyone and welcome to the world of new Ideas!

07 January 2014
In philosophy, the term idea has been used to cover a range of concepts. Ideas are often construed as mental representational images; i.e., images of some object. For our purposes for this blog we will define ideas as a visible representation of a conception: a replica of a pattern or a thought, plan, or suggestion about what to do. Hard to believe but our modern world is built on ideas and the skill and determination of the person coming up with the idea to following through to its completion.

Over the Holiday’s I had some time and was able to catch up on a lot of reading I had set aside over the last year and I noticed a trend in many different forms of media from the internet to newspapers to television and there seems to be a call to arms for entrepreneurs. We should start with a definition of this term; entrepreneurship is a process of identifying and starting a business venture, sourcing and organizing the required resources and taking both the risks and rewards associated with the venture. A new business started by an entrepreneur is referred to as a start-up company.

When we started our company in 2008 there were not that many resources both for information as well as financial support available as for start-ups today. It would seem that everyone is doing something with an idea. I think ten years from now this period in time will be remembered as the era of the entrepreneur. Twitter is full of billionaires tweeting daily to legions of followers information on how to make it in business and company’s like startup.com and shows like Dragon’s Den and Shark tank (Love those shows) match entrepreneurs to investors as well as other skilled professionals interested in getting in on the ground floor of a good idea.

20 years ago most people’s parents might have told them to go to school, get a degree and get a job and get married this might not be the most sound plan for this generation. It would seem that one of the only ways to guarantee success in this new economy (unless your father is Sir Richard Branson) is through hard work. The old adage hard work trumps talent any given day is very true.

In fact, speaking with many business owners over the years they complain that it is hard to find good people who want to work today and many people who have built successful businesses for their children find that their kids were put through good schools (If they had good parents) and don’t want to come back and run the family business and why should they as they do not suffer the same hardships that might have caused their parents to start that particular business when they did and thus they probably don’t have the same drives and motivation to keep the family business going.

I think it should be mandatory that students today be given a project from grade 9 to graduation; something that they could put a small amount of work into each week for 5 years and see how small efforts everyday can lead to a big accomplishment. Most of the young people who graduate with wonderful degrees from really good schools want well paying jobs with great companies yet most of them could not tell you how to improve the company’s bottom line if they were hired which is the way most companies hire today. I don’t think the economy will ever go back to the industrial drives machine that it once was.

I think moving forward the world economy will be people driven and addressing the needs of people and that is a human science that we can all jump on board on. As the internet has grown so has the population and there is a world full of people who need things and are willing to work for them so there is no shortage of need and want nor is there a shortage ideas however rather that reinventing the wheel. We should see what else we can come up with to grow the human spirit in order for the next generation of entrepreneur to make our generations innovations look like they are from the Stone Age.
