Integrity is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes. In ethics, integrity is regarded as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one’s actions. Integrity can be regarded as the opposite of hypocrisy, in that it regards internal consistency as a virtue, and suggests that parties holding apparently conflicting values should account for the discrepancy or alter their beliefs.
The word “integrity” stems from the Latin adjective integer (whole, complete). In this context, integrity is the inner sense of “wholeness” deriving from qualities such as honesty and consistency of character. As such, one may judge that others “have integrity” to the extent that they act according to the values, beliefs and principles they claim to hold.
A value system’s abstraction depth and range of applicable interaction may also function as significant factors in identifying integrity due to their congruence or lack of congruence with observation. A value system may evolve over time while retaining integrity if those who espouse the values account for and resolve inconsistencies. It is impossible to build a structure on a foundation with even the smallest crack in it as this crack will eventually cause the structure to shift it’s foundation it is built on and eventually colapse the structure. This can be said for many facets in life.
While we are not perfect it is important that we attempt to be honest with ourselves and others as much as possible because the truth always comes out in the end with enough time. In fact it can be said philosophically that life is about discovering the truth since nothing that is built on a foundation of lies or deception will ever stand the test of time.
Much like the Google algorithm which has evolved over time to be a truth finder. Google wants to provide the best and most accurate information to it’s users and also to make sure that it’s users can find exactly what they are looking for on the internet and when companies use deceptive practices to position their companies on the first page and offer services which do not benefit the user it is only a matter of time before the algorithm identifies the culprit and takes the appropriate action.
The same can be said for life, a lie or untruth can only survive for so long, in a world striving for truth and justice. In order for those of us who value our time, which is a scarce commodity we realize that it is only possible to live in truth when conducting our professional affairs or personal affairs, untruth can only lead to eventual disaster.
The slow man with integrity will ultimately catch the swift one who has none. – Unkown A person is not given integrity. It results from the relentless pursuit of honesty at all times.
Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) British author.
