2nd Half Of August Is Almost Here!

12 August 2013

The other day I heard in a television commercial (I really swear I am not a TV hound it’s just you pick up on the back ground noise! Lol) the announcers of one particular ad say that September was quickly approaching and that we were going “back to reality” I started laughing at this one because it made it seem that enjoying the summer was somehow a fantasy. I started my sales career working in finance for 7 years at a firm downtown Toronto located at York and Adelaide so I am quite familiar with the cycle. Basically in Corporate Canada the year runs from September to early July for the top brass. If you don’t get it done between Sept and July of the following year then good luck till the fall because most likely the party you need to connect with is at the cottage with the family or on vacay ie deadsville.

Summer vacation (also called summer holidays or summer break) is a vacation in the summertime between school years in which students and instructors are off school typically between 6 and 14 weeks, depending on the country and district. In Canada, the first day of summer vacation for public schools is the last Saturday in June. Depending on the province, students can get 2-3 months of summer vacation. This may vary in Quebec (earlier due to provincial June 24 holiday). The last day of summer vacation is Labour Day. This can vary in Private schools. School generally resumes the day after Labour Day (in September).

Some countries only get six weeks or two months summer vacation because students supposedly forget large amounts of information learned in the past year. Throughout the 20th century, numerous studies examined general learning loss among all students during the summer months. A meta-analysis of 39 studies conducted since 1978 found that in the absence of school, all students score lower on standardized math tests at the end of the summer as compared to their performance on the same tests at the beginning of summer.

Other education reformers believed that children were over stimulated in a system which required 48 weeks of schooling. They believe that over-schooling could lead to nervous disorders, depression, and insanity. They believe that children need the 2–3 months off to relax and also to take a break from other childhood stresses associated with school such as peer pressure, cliques, bullying, and the pressure of heavy loads of schoolwork and homework. Three weeks to back to school and back to work and I for one can’t wait!!!
